I-526 Extension Affects Cyclists in Charleston

Dear Charleston cyclists,

The extension of I-526 is especially relevant for cyclists because of the way the interstate will divide communities, make the James Island connector so that we can’t bike on it, and take our focus away from created more functional bike-friendly streets.

This time there are three meetings on the extension of I-526, at the dates and locations below. If folks from the Bike Co-op can come out and submit comments any of the meetings, that would be great. At all these meetings, the Coastal Conservation League will be there with materials, talking points, explanations, and stickers so that everyone knows how strong the opposition to I-526 is!

To improve congestion and our quality of life, we need a better, positive vision for Charleston. This vision would have roads with less congestion, but would also encourage our major commercial centers that are so crowded with cars today to turn into great places where people want to shop, walk, and enjoy themselves. Please come to the public meetings to voice your support for an alternative to extending I-526 that will improve congestion and make Charleston a better place to live.

The meeting times are:

Thursday, November 13, 2008
from 5 pm to 7 pm at Ft. Johnson Middle School - 1825 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412

Tuesday, November 18, 2008
from 5 pm to 7 pm at West Ashley High School - 4060 W. Wildcat Boulevard, Charleston, SC 29414

Thursday, November 20, 2008
from 5 pm to 7 pm at St. Johns High School - 1518 Main Road, Johns Island, SC 29455

Come voice your opinion and help steer development towards a more human and sustainable solution!

Holy City Bike Co-op
